National Sandwich Week
Let us take you back to a few of your favourite childhood moments; more than likely, they involve a bite of a buttie, childhood parties, afternoon teas with pals, and a meal of comfort after every challenging day.
So where did our love for the humble sandwich begin?
The story takes us to John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, all in the name of not interrupting a game of cards. Around 1762, the rumour is that John Montagu requested meat tucked between two pieces of bread while gambling, so he could eat with one hand without getting his cards greasy (wise man). From that point on, the sandwich became a canvas evolving with travel, culture, and curiosity into something wonderfully expressive.
We don’t normally celebrate national days, but missing National Sandwich Week would be some sort of baker’s crime. If you, too, love and often feel the comfort of a well-formed sandwich, it’s time we gave a little appreciation to John Montagu’s genius idea and celebrated #nationalsanwichweek with us. As a sign of our appreciation, we even created a sarnie-loving hashtag too #LAsarnielove
From 18–24 May, we’re inviting you to share your creations with us. Thoughtful, bold, beautifully simple or gloriously overfilled, we want to see them all. And the more the merrier, we want to see your show-stopping toppings, and which loafs are sliced up and getting the love.
