An insight into Heft – It takes courage to create a restaurant

If you live in the Lakes, selecting where to eat is becoming harder and harder. We have some of the finest restaurants and eateries in our country, all unique, and just like you, are navigating their way through these unprecedented times. They do what they do with the motive of creating some happy memories for your loved ones and their families too.

Next time you dine out, apart from enjoying a fantastic meal, dine out knowing you’re not only creating epic memories for yourself, you’re contributing to the happy memories of all those that serve you too.

It takes courage to create a restaurant in the best of times, but during the middle of a pandemic and subsequent ‘pingdemic’, steering your hopes and dreams through uncertain times needs saluting and certainly acknowledging. We have known Kevin and Nicola Tickle for some time and they always inspire. Consistently surprising, prepare yourself for the unexpected with these guys. We have witnessed the creation of Heft’s personality with glee. We knew it would be special, and very “Tickle” the moment their hearts unfolded the on-point brand and the building got a battering, all for the right reasons, the paintbrushes were out! All narrated by this incredible couple, with two little ones learning to forage and feast in the wings of this family business!

If you love your food, beautiful places and careful, considered choices, you will love Heft as much as we do already. Why do we love it? In the core of all extraordinary business, you find even more remarkable people, grafters, creatives and those determined to make the possible work when on the surface everything feels impossible.

Let’s find out about Heft – what they do and why – Meet the Tickles

Heft is a stunning 17th century Inn in the small Lake District village of Newton in Cartmel. Heft remains very much as an Inn, with friendly, casually considered service, cosy up log fires and a well-chosen and high-quality beverage offering centred at the heart of the inn.

If you treasure an excellent food experience, you will discover the addition of a top-class restaurant serving food of exceptional quality, woven from the local landscape by award-winning Michelin Star level Chef Patron, Kevin Tickle.

Tell us something we don’t know about Heft?

“We’re obsessive about sourcing things for our business. We spend as much time looking at beer and the paper that our menus are printed on as we do the tasting menu”

What’s the most important thing for you about the bread you serve from Lovingly Artisan and why?

We love to shop locally. It makes sense to everyone involved, but it absolutely has to bring quality with it. Whilst shopping small and sourcing locally very much captures the zeitgeist of the last decade, it doesn’t always follow through with a quality to it. Lovingly Artisan does. We know that their ethos, family values, and production align with ours and beautifully sit alongside our product.

How important is the provenance and terroir of the products Lovingly Artisan creates for you?

The guys at Lovingly Artisan put as much time into finding the right ingredient, perfect process and developing their product as we do, so we know by the time we get it, the love and skill that’s been used right from the wheat will show through. It’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? Kevin and Nicola Tickle
