Unfortunately, there’s nothing to legally define the ingredients used in sourdough bread, which is a massive challenge to all small artisan bakers. The mainstream bakeries have begun to hijack the word Sourdough to market products made with lots of additives. In many cases, the loaves include yeast to consumers – This is why some bakers call for labelling changes.

Sourfaux and Sourdough are being sold as the same!

We believe the consumer deserves a far more honest approach to retailing methods, and Sourfaux and Sourdough are being sold as the same is misleading. Food has become so dishonest, even though we have so much legislation around labelling our loaves. We have a far more genuine, open approach to the creation of our real sourdough bread, that’s why we are making a huge commitment in our support to the Real Bread Campaign. Lovingly Artisan is dedicated weekly time to the campaign and mission. We believe this is about protecting the industry for the next generation of artisan bakers.

Real sourdough bread is gaining attention with #SourdoughSeptember, a campaign that supports the bakers who make loaves with incredible health benefits packed with nutritional value. It’s all about being a genuine sourdough baker. Whilst protecting the consumer to who know little about Sourfaux and Sourdough being sold as the same when they are worlds apart.

What’s self-evident is that we’re not getting enough fibre in our diets, and that’s primarily down to the fact that in more than half of all UK families, around 50% of their diet consists of ultra-processed foods. And what’s more, concern is that only 25% understand what ultra-processed foods are! So many of us are genuinely upset that the Sourfaux and Sourdough are being sold as the same misleads someone trying to make a positive diet difference.

The food industry has hijacked the fibre message and uses highly processed fibre in their products like retrograded corn starch. Combine a poor understanding of diet and the questionable ethics of the food industry, and you end up in the situation in which we find ourselves, with an increasingly obese and unhealthy population at risk of serious illness and, in many cases, death. All sounds very dramatic, yet it is such an important message.

There’s no doubt that Sourdough is trendy now, but in reality, there’s much more to it than you might think. Sourdough is a naturally fermented food that’s been around nearly as long as man. You see, the bacteria present in the natural fermentation process eats the sugars and starch in the grains, which in turn helps the gut absorb all of the goodness found in bread made in this way, which is especially relevant in the aftermath of recent lockdowns.

So many are already awakening to the importance of real Sourdough. Made with simple, transparent ingredients that are hugely beneficial, providing a good cross-section of vitamins, high levels of dietary fibre, increased probiotics in the gut, has excellent nutritional properties, and is easier to digest than mass-manufactured bread. The Real Bread Campaign and Lovingly Artisan have a great deal to achieve, and with you, our achievement will unfold far faster.
