What makes an exceptional sandwich?
What makes an exceptional sandwich? This portable snack is as inventive today as it was in 1762! I do hope they knighted John Montagu the 4th Earl of Sandwich.
Apparently, and many food historians agree, Montagu was very keen on the card tables! He encouraged little food distraction during a card game. Many say he asked this cook to bring him something he could eat without leaving the table! The sandwich was born. Montagu enjoyed his meat and bread, and this concoction grew popular in London society circles. Hence taking the Earl’s name – Sandwich.
John Montagu was not the first, it’s said his inspiration came from travelling abroad to the Mediterranean, where Turkish and Greek mezze platters of cheese, meats and dips which were all “sandwiched” between and on layers of bread, just as we do today.
We are in the decade of the amazingly made sandwich. If you’re in the buttie game, your mission is to attract a sandwich loving tribe. No simple sarnie is going to cut it!
You have got to be innovative, and we have to be inventive too. We are continually evolving our sourdough menu with taste, and eating experience in mind – hence the creation of our Danish Rugbrød, the reinvention of our ciabatta recipe where we switched to beautiful organic flour, and most recently, our new Quinoa Sourdough – you have to taste it!
We are feeding a nation of food explorers, and an educated tribe of foodies. All seeking a taste sensation experience.
Let’s learn from those that inspire – Go find your sandwich!
