How to freeze your Sourdough

We are all about feeling smug. Don’t you just love it when you have a secret stash of the good stuff in your freezer? For some of us, it’s about living a more organised life, especially when life around you feels more and more unpredictable.

Give a little thought to what you would like to squirrel away this winter in the freezer. Those ‘treat yourself’ loaves, the type of loaves that make you beam inside with joy! We all need some feel-good factor even if your feel-good factor comes in the shape of a well-cared for loaf.

There is something rather satisfying about having something special in the freezer for those unprepared moments, or a night when you fancy something tasty. Sensational.

You can’t beat Mrs Kirkhams Cheese & Chilli Sourdough – ideal for those cosy up wintery nights. Reserve yourself a Spiced Apple prefect for slow morning breakfasts and brunches or keep hold of our Danish Rugbrød which adores cheese as much as we do.

Squirrelling away your favourites as well as a few practical loaves too, such as a White Sourdough Miche; large enough to feed a tribe of hungry walking warriors. All of our sourdoughs and ciabatta’s freeze amazingly well. The secret is to freeze on the day of the bake.

Freeze your Sourdough successfully.

  1. Pack each individual sourdough loaf separately in a size appropriate freezer bag.
  2. Store your sourdough loaf on its side in your freezer. This will create more freezer space whilst protecting the integrity of your loaves. This will have a remarkable impact on maintaining the shape and form of your Sourdough.

Our Ciabatta rolls don’t mind a chill – how to freeze Ciabatta

  1. Place your ciabatta carefully in a freezer bag, storing with care to maintain the shape and texture. If you have little space, pack your ciabatta on their sides, this will create more space without harming the shape and texture
  2. To defrost – remove your ciabatta rolls from the freezer bags, as your rolls will not benefit from the damp environment such as a freezer bag.
  3. Once the ciabatta is defrosted, place in your Lovingly Artisan paper bag provided by the bakery – These bags will be more than happy to be used time and time again.

Goodness knows what entertaining will look like this Christmas. Our plans are getting smaller and smaller. The eternal optimist in me, says be prepared for a party of guests even if my party may consist of a party of two this year.

Let’s visualise, and perhaps hope for, some unexpected yet welcomed guests this winter – defrosting your Sourdough.

  1. Remove the sourdough loaf from the freezer bag. Your bread is far happier defrosting naturally at room temperature rather than within the freezer bag. Don’t be tempted to microwave! This may hinder the longevity of your bread.
  2. Once your loaf has defrosted naturally, place in a Lovingly Artisan greaseproof bag, linen wrap or linen tea towel. Wrap your loafs in your bag/linen towel, then place in the bed bin

It’s best to store your bread in a conventional bread tin, your Lovingly Artisan Sourdough box. Avoid sunlight, because this will dehydrate the loaf. Placing your bread in the fridge will have a similar impact on the quality of the loafs life. Bread adores ambient room temperatures. It will be quite happy living in your Lovingly Artisan Sourdough box.

Catherine that is understood for those that are able to visit but what about someone like me who has to order online? How is the bread packaged when it’s sent and how well will it keep? Can I still freeze and make my order larger in order to make the most of the delivery charge?

  • Catherine says:

Great Question Alison – All of our online deliveries are ideal for freezing. We pre-pack all the bread in freezer appropriate bags, ensuring sending the bread all set for freezing. We want our savvy bread lovers to make the most of the next day delivery charge.

If you have a few favourites and freezing is your mission, have a peek at the fortnightly subscription – this may be an option worth considering.

Thank you for all of your support artisan love, we really appreciate all of your small business kindness.
