The 12 breads of Christmas

As the season of merry-making and fulsome feasting gets underway, here’s a delicious dozen of our favourite ways to put bread at the centre of the festive table.

  1. A Saffron Bun for Santa

We hear the big man is extra generous if he finds a warmed, buttered Saffron Bun with his glass of sherry next to the fireplace on Christmas Eve.

  1. Croissants round the tree

We love scoffing pastries while we open our pressies – especially when they’re as good as the Croissants we make ourselves with lashings of grass-fed Normandy butter.

  1. Festive fry-up

The best all-rounder to fry or grill and top with eggs and bacon? We nominate our toaster-friendly Einkorn Tin loaf, packed with flavour and ancient-grain goodness.

  1. Mini smørrebrød

Our Danish Rugbrød loves smoked salmon and cream cheese, and our Mini Rugbrød has the perfect dimensions for canape-size open sandwiches.

  1. Saucy sensation

For a bread sauce that knocks other trimmings out of the park, we crumb our tasty White Sourdough and stir it into buttery, creamy milk steeped with cloves, onions, bay leaves and peppercorns.

  1. Viva las vegetables

Spice up a simple veg gratin with a topping of Cheese & Chilli sourdough breadcrumbs. (Also works on soups.)

  1. Go crackers

Slice very thinly a loaf of Spelt & Linseed sourdough, rub with oil, grill until golden, then cool. That’s how we make fabulously nutty-tasting crispbreads to go with our cheeses and patés.

  1. Hard-working hero

With its gut-healthy blend of wheat, rye, linseed, millet and sunflower seeds, our Five-Grain Rye is a magnificent multi-tasker that rises to every culinary challenge Christmas throws at it.

  1. BEST turkey butty

Spiced Apple & Sultana loaf is our secret weapon. We smear it thickly with butter and cold bread sauce and stuff in as much cold turkey as we can. It’s our favourite meal of the holidays.

  1. Stripped-back suppers

For the times when we just want something quick and comforting, dippy eggs with Malted Barley soldiers is our go-to five-minute meal.

  1. Crowd pleaser

Olive-oil rich Focaccia is the perfect party food: we keep it in the freezer, defrost when needed and refresh for a few minutes in a super-hot oven to fill our kitchen with garlicky, herby deliciousness.

  1. Hangover toast

You know that savoury, salty hit you crave when you’re feeling a bit … overindulged? A toasted, buttered slice of our Cheese & Marmite loaf works wonders (so we’ve been told).
